The laser beam penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the melanin found in the hair follicle. The effectiveness of the laser is based on the process known as Selective Photothermalysis.

It targets specific chromophores in the skin, usually melanin or blood. The lasers damage the chromophores by selectively heating them while leaving surrounding tissue unharmed. Over time, the hair follicle is destroyed (without affecting the surrounding skin)thus preventing hair growth and regeneration. The procedure is non-invasive and safe if it is performed by trained personnel. It does not damage the surrounding delicate skin, therefore it can be used in sensitive areas such as bikiniupper lip or chin. Laser hair removal allows to remove unwanted hair without the side effects associated with more commonly used methods of hair removal such as skin irritation caused by the use of disposable razors, or problems with ingrowing hair caused by waxing. Thick, darker hair containing a lot of melanin contrasts with light skin and this distinction makes laser hair removal procedure more effective. Individuals with a fair complexion and strong, thick, dark hair, are considered the ideal group of patients for epilation. The initial results of laser hair removal become visible about 3 weeks after the first treatment session. The following sessions should be performed in ranges from 6 to 10 weeks depending on the hair growth cycle and the rate of hair loss.

Laser hair removal treatment should not be performed during the period of pregnancy or breastfeeding. In addition, all photosensitizing agents (e.g. vitamin A therapy) or herbal remedies such as St John’s wort or calendula should be discontinued at least 1 week prior to first hair removal session. Laser hair removal is also not recommended to people who suffer from dermatologic skin conditions (e.g. vitiligo or psoriasis).
